Heraldry[ | ]
The coat of arms for Novigrad is not actually described in the novels. This particular coat of arms was designed by our resident heraldry and Witcher expert Mboro. For a different take on the coat of arms, we have the Czech concept.
Very similar COA was shown in the second issue of "Biały Wilk" (The White Wolf) magazine.
History[ | ]
Before the First Landing, Novigrad was small elven settlement. When the first humans' ships arrived in the Pontar Delta, the city was abandoned. It quickly became the capital of the new country created by king Sambuk, the ancestor of the first king of Redania.
During the reign of Vestibor the Proud, Novigrad was conquered by Temerians during the Seven Years' War. The capital of Redania was then moved to Tretogor and Novigrad became a Temerian city for a long time [1][2].
The situation changed during the reign of Vestibor's grandson, Radovid III the Bold, after long negotiations, a compromise was reached and the metropolis was acclaimed as a free city [2].
Although Redaniam kings are officially recoginized as "kings of Redania and Novigrad", the real authority is the hierarch who is elected during sessions held by the Council of Electors [3]. The current hierarch is Cyrus Engelkind Hemmelfart [4].

However, he could not pay the witcher for his services at the time. Having recognized Γκέραλτ, he gives him 100 .

Novigrad will play a much more central role in The Witcher 3, allowing players to finally explore the city. The setting has been described as based on medieval Amsterdam, with touches of Venice.
