The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a domesticated fowl. One of the most common and widespread domestic animals, used by humans primarily as a source of food - both their meat and their eggs are consumable. Male chickens are called roosters or capons (younger males); females are hens (older than year) or pullets (younger ones). The young are called chicks.
