Cutscenes in The Witcher game series depict important events that often begin and conclude the narratives of each game. They are primarily non-interactive and are not rendered using the in-game engine.
In The Witcher computer game[ | ]
There are two major cutscenes in The Witcher: the "intro" and the so-called "outro". These two scenes are given the full cinematic treatment and together they frame the story told in the game. Both were directed by Tomasz Bagiński. There are also a number of less elaborate cut scenes throughout the game. Each Chapter is also framed by opening and closing scenes. Pivotal plot points are elucidated in the same manner.
Intro[ | ]
The introductory cutscene, or "intro", depicts most of the short story "The Witcher" by Andrzej Sapkowski. This is the story of the first time Geralt is asked to remove a curse from a Princess. In fact, it is the same curse and the same princess that he must save in the game.
The part of the story which is depicted begins with Geralt's preparations prior to taking on the striga but after having discovered Ostrit's presence. It is very faithful to the original tale.
Outro[ | ]
The outro is the final cut scene of The Witcher computer game. It is very dramatic and leaves many unanswered questions.
In the cinematic end sequence, King Foltest is attacked by a masked assassin, and is defended by Geralt. This assassin is very skilled and fights using two swords. The battle is pitched and the outcome does not seem at all certain, but at the last moment, Geralt throws his recently acquired coin purse at the villain. This ploy startles the assailant sufficiently to allow the witcher an unparried blow, which he lands with aplomb, severing one of the attacker's arms.
In the aftermath, both Geralt and King Foltest take a closer look at the villain's face which has now been unmasked. Inexplicably, the man appears to have the same eye mutation as Geralt, as well as potion straps on his armor... to be continued...
Static cutscenes[ | ]
Each Chapter of the game opens with a static cutscene. These scenes are made up of large format images which are panned over with a narrative voice-over. Pivotal plot points and some of Geralt's thoughts and memories are also presented in this manner. There are sixty of these though many are path-dependent, so in any single play through of the game a player would only see about half of them.
