'''In the Claws of Madness''' is a quest from Chapter I in ''[[The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings]]''.

==Walkthrough==
Initiate this quest by talking to [[Cedric (elf)|Cedric]] and asking him for work. He will tell you about two missing men who went off to explore the [[burned down hospital]] nearby.

You will find [[Rupert|one of the missing men]] near five crazed [[nekker]]s next to some ruins poking out of the ground, to the south of [[Flotsam]]. Follow the map marker over to where a dog was fighting the nekkers (there is no way to save the dog). There will be a set of stairs leading underground.

Go down the stairs, and explore the ruins until you come to a large room with a wooden trap door in the center. Once you loot the chest in the room, two [[wraith]]s will spawn and attack you. If you have problem with them (and many people have), you can use [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9jrBXEO-Xs this simple solution with traps], 100% effective no matter what level you are. Once you kill the wraiths, you'll see some ghosts (non-hostile), and a wandering soldier ghost who seems to spawn fire that blocks off certain paths. Follow the open paths to more chests and wraiths.

Eventually you will encounter [[Gridley]] (one of the missing explorers), who is rambling and needs some [[Medication for Gridley|medicine]] to calm him down. The medicine is in the room on the right before the wall of fire, next to two more wraiths. After you give Gridley the medicine, he will tell you what happened to the sanitarium and explain that the wandering soldier is a cursed ghost that haunts the area.

Talk to the ghost, who demands retribution.

You can either trick Gridley and his friend into coming back down to the ruins (to be killed), or you can trick the ghost either by giving him the hearts and eyes of Nekkers or pigs, which he will eventually realize are fake, and you will have to fight him. It doesn't matter which eyes and hearts you use, both aren't hearts and eyes of murderers which ghost wanted. If you kill the ghost, Gridley and his friend can be left alone or taken into custody by [[Marietta Loredo|Loredo's mother]], who is, in fact, the only surviving patient of the asylum who was raped by the soldiers and later slit their commanders' throat and escaped with the treasure map. If you kill Gridley and his friend you can loot the diagram for a [[robust witchers' silver sword]] off Gridley's body.

==Notes==

* While exploring the ruin of the [[Burned down hospital]] in the surface, you can possibly find [[Malena (elf)|Malena]], who is hiding in this place (providing that you did not give her to Loredo's soldiers).
* Alternatively, you can try to give to the Nilfgaardian ghost some pig's hearts. In this case, you have to ask for them at the butcher in [[Flotsam]]. But the Ghost will not fall into the trick the same and you will finally be forced to fight him.
* Near the room in which the Ghost is waiting there is a small collapsible wall. If you cast Aard on it you will find a very nice treasure chest full of loot.
* Collecting all the additional information about the asylum's history from the chests here unlocks the [[The Witcher 2 achievements#Librarian|Librarian achievement]].
* Based on a letter found in Loredo's mansion, Marietta has always been wealthy and used that wealth to secure her son's position in Flotsam. This would suggest that Marietta found the treasure and put it to her own use.
