Older languages are the languages which arose prior to the Conjunction of the Spheres. They are still spoken on the continent, but mostly by non-humans although mages and other highly educated individuals also speak them.

Newer languages, those which developed after the Conjunction, are generally known as Common Speech. The dialect spoken by the dryads is sometimes considered part of this group, but it is uncertain whether it should.
