Witchhunt ending

The witch hunts of the Northern Realms targeted sorceresses from the Lodge, other magic organizations, and allegedly "objectionable" mages. Lasting four years, from 1272 to 1276 [1], most victims were burnt or impaled at the stake. Nonhumans and alchemists were also persecuted. It is unclear if these attacks were lead by the Church of the Eternal Fire and followers of Kreve, or other reactionary political movements.

Hierarch Cyrus Engelkind Hemmelfart [2] and the priest Willemer [1] instigated the hunts. Both rulers Radovid V, king of Redania and Nilfgaard's Emhyr var Emreis (in his own way) stood by and did nothing to stop them [2]. Its participants included, naturally witch hunters and knights of the Flaming Rose [3]. However, not every mage was innocent of the charges leveled against them, nor was every participant a sadistic devil.

During the 14th and 15th centuries, these events and the Northern Wars were together labelled as a Dark Age in scholarly chronicles. The Lodge was eventually rehabilitated, with the victims elevated to sainthood and martyrdom[1].
